What is the difference between search arbitrage and SEO?

SEO earns visitors for free by ranking in search results, which takes time and content quality. Search arbitrage pays for visitors with advertising and must earn back more than it spent the same day. SEO has low running costs and slow feedback; arbitrage has high running costs and instant feedback. The same page can be monetised by either route.

Short answer · The Arbitrage Desk

With organic traffic the cost is effort and patience, and the margin on each visit is close to 100% once the page ranks. With paid traffic every visit has a price, so unit economics decide everything.

The two meet in a few places. A site with strong organic traffic can add Related Search on Content or a search box monetisation as extra monetisation without buying a single click, which search engines regard far more favourably. Conversely, arbitrage pages rarely rank, because pages built around ads seldom satisfy what search engines look for. Both are affected by AI Overviews, which answer some queries directly and reduce clicks to websites.
