AI Overviews
AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results, answering the question directly with links to sources.
For some searches Google now writes an answer itself. Its help page describes an AI Overview as an AI-generated snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper, shown when its systems judge it helpful. Users cannot switch it off, and Google warns that the responses can contain mistakes.
The effect on clicks has been measured. A Pew Research Center analysis of 900 US adults' browsing in March 2025, covering 68,879 Google searches, found that about 18% of searches produced an AI summary. Users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits to pages with a summary, against 15% without. They clicked a link inside the summary on about 1% of visits, and ended their browsing session more often (26% against 16%). Google has publicly disputed the study's conclusions.
For search arbitrage the consequences are indirect but important. Fewer clicks from Google mean less organic traffic for content sites, and informational queries are the most affected. Google announced in May 2025 that ads would expand in AI Overviews and come to its AI Mode, so advertiser budgets may shift towards those surfaces. See zero-click search and generative search.
Think of it like this
It is a librarian who, instead of pointing you to the right shelf, reads the books and tells you the answer at the desk. Handy for you, quiet for the shelves.
