Will AI Overviews kill search arbitrage?

Not directly, because arbitrage visitors come from paid adverts, not from Google's results page. The indirect effects matter more. If AI answers reduce clicks on search ads, advertisers may shift budgets and search engines may protect their own pages by paying partners less. AI also makes article pages cheap to produce, which invites stricter quality rules.

Short answer · The Arbitrage Desk

Evidence on user behaviour is clear enough. A Pew Research Center study of about 900 US adults in March 2025 found users clicked a result on 8% of searches with an AI summary, against 15% without one. That is the zero-click search trend applied to AI Overviews.

For arbitrage, the path of harm runs through the engine's economics. Google has placed ads inside AI Overviews since late 2024 and has been rolling out ad formats in AI Mode. If advertiser money moves to those surfaces, the pool available to the search partner network could shrink. Operators already report payout volatility. None of this is certain, and generative search could also create new syndicated formats. Plan for dependence on one feed to be the main risk.
