What Marchex does
Marchex is the best-documented case of a listed company built on direct navigation. In November 2004 it agreed to buy the assets of Name Development, a holder of a very large portfolio of domain names, for about $164 million in cash and stock. The idea was that people type words straight into the address bar, and a page of ads on those names earns money with no marketing cost.
The bet aged badly as browsers and search engines changed how people navigate. In April 2015 Marchex sold more than 200,000 domains to GoDaddy for $28.1 million, a fraction of what it had paid.
Today Marchex sells call-tracking and conversation analytics to businesses and has no role in search feeds. It is still listed on Nasdaq.
How it makes money
Today, software subscriptions for call analytics. Historically, pay-per-click ads on its own domains.

Earnings, explained
Marchex Q2 revenue dips, but profitability improves post-Archenia acquisition
Marchex reported Q2 2026 revenue of $11.0 million, down from $11.7 million in Q2 2025. The company posted a net loss of $0.4 million, compared to net income of $0.1 million a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA improved to $0.7 million, up from $0.6 million, and would have been $1.7 million excluding $1.0 million in reorganization and acquisition costs. Looking ahead, pro forma combined revenue for Q3 2026 is expected to be $16.0–$16.5 million, with adjusted EBITDA of $2.3–$2.5 million.
Despite a slight drop in standalone revenue, Marchex is showing early signs of improved profitability and growth potential following its acquisition of Archenia. The company is betting on new AI-driven products and cross-selling to its top customers to drive future revenue and margin expansion.
