OpenAI to run ads in ChatGPT image generation; early data undercuts paid search CPA
· 5h ago · Originally reported by PPC Land
OpenAI plans to test advertising during ChatGPT's image-generation feature in the US this month. Early attribution data from Rockerbox shows WeightWatchers' acquisition cost running 15.3% below paid search, while measurement firms DoubleVerify and IAS are preparing their own verification pilots.
Why it matters
If AI assistant ads deliver lower CPAs than search, arbitrage operators could face a new traffic-source competitor — or gain a cheaper acquisition channel to feed search clicks. How these placements are measured and whether they count as 'search' in feed contracts will shape the opportunity.
Explain it like I’m new here
It's like a new store opening right next to the highway toll booth — if it's cheaper to get customers there, the toll-booth operator (search arbitrage) loses traffic.
