Will AI assistants and chatbots show search ads?

They have started to. Google has shown ads within AI Overviews since late 2024 and has been introducing ad formats for AI Mode, available through its automated campaign types. Other assistant makers have tested sponsored answers. Whether these ads will be syndicated to outside publishers, as traditional search ads are, is not yet settled.

Short answer · The Arbitrage Desk

For search arbitrage the key question is not whether Ads in AI assistants exist but who is allowed to host them. Traditional search ads became an arbitrage opportunity because engines syndicated them widely. Ads generated inside a conversation are tied to the assistant's own interface and so far are sold through the engine's own campaigns.

Two directions are plausible. Engines may keep AI ad inventory to themselves, which would reduce the share of advertiser budgets reaching partners. Or new partner programmes may appear for sites and apps that embed generative search. Some arbitrage companies are already repositioning: System1, for example, has described agent-facing data products. Treat confident predictions in either direction with caution.
