What types of fraud happen in search arbitrage?

The main types are fake clicks from bots or click farms, paying or tricking people to click, laundering bad traffic through clean-looking sites, cloaking that shows reviewers a different advert or page, hijacked browsers and adware that redirect searches, forced or fake search queries, and fake conversions sent to make poor traffic look valuable.

Short answer · The Arbitrage Desk

They fall into families. Fake clicks: Bot traffic, a click farm, Self-clicking. Fake users: Residential proxy networks and a headless browser dressed up as a phone. Deception: Cloaking, a misleading ad, hidden ads. Laundering: Traffic laundering, traffic blending and referrer spoofing. Hijacking: Search hijacking, adware and malvertising. Query abuse: Query fraud and keyword stuffing. Downstream: Fake conversion and lead fraud.

The victim is usually the advertiser, who pays for a click with no customer behind it. The honest publisher is a victim too, since bought traffic that turns out to be fake leads to a clawback on money already spent. Knowing the patterns is the first defence.
