What is System1 and what does it do?
System1 is a US company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker SST. It buys traffic and monetises it with search ads, runs a partner network that lets other buyers do the same, and owns consumer products including Startpage, MapQuest and CouponFollow. Its search marketing revenue fell steeply in 2025 and 2026 after Google's changes.
System1 is a useful case study because it publishes its numbers. For the second quarter of 2026 it reported revenue of $30.2 million, down 61% year on year, with its owned products making up about 64% of the total. Management said a partner network-wide change by Google in June 2026 cut its RSOC monetisation by more than 30%, and that it later recovered part of the loss.
It has responded by leaning on its products and by restructuring debt. For an operator the lessons are about platform risk and concentration risk: a company with scale, a long Google relationship and its own technology was still exposed to a single partner's decisions. The move from AdSense for Domains to Related Search on Content did not restore earlier revenue.
